Buying a home – especially if it’s your first time – can sometimes feel intimidating. It can be an emotional experience and when we get emotionally involved, even the smallest delay can seem like a huge setback. Here’s how to get through the house-buying process while keeping a sense of perspective.

Accept that there may be some bumps in the road

The ancient philosophers may not have understood the difference between the Bank of England base rate and a standard variable but they can still teach us a thing or two about overcoming life’s obstacles. This is especially true in the house-buying process. No matter how much you plan, there’s always a chance that something might upset the process. As the philosopher, Epictetus said: “Don’t seek for everything to happen as you wish it would, but rather wish that everything happens as it actually will – then your life will flow well.”

Listen to the experts

Buying a house is, for many people, one of the most complex things you will ever do. That’s why it’s so important that you choose the best people – whether they’re mortgage brokers, estate agents, surveyors or solicitors – to guide you through the process. For example, while you think you’ve found the right mortgage, speaking with us here at Charles Cameron will save you time and hassle as we will search the market on your behalf to find the most suitable mortgage for you. The same with a solicitor. They are there to work with you on the house purchase and that means carrying out the necessary checks, such as with land registry, to make sure you’re not walking into something you weren’t aware of. Unlike you, professionals are not emotionally involved, and they’ve seen it all before. Take notice of what they say.

Understand the process

Knowledge is power. That’s particularly true when you’re buying a property. As you begin the search for a new home, we will help you navigate your way through the home-buying process. We know where the bumps in the road usually occur and how to most easily manage any delays or issues. From the outset, we’ll work with you to identify the right amount of money to borrow, the compromises you might have to make and how long it will all take. By helping you demystify the process, we make it easier to handle any challenges along the way.

Speak to someone who’s been through it

While professional advice is vital, it also helps to talk to a ‘civilian’ who’s already bought a home successfully. While they can’t give you an expert overview, they can share their own emotional experiences. What you’ll typically find is yes, there were the occasional hiccups and stresses along the way but rarely does that come even close to the feelings of happiness and achievement that come from completing the purchase!

Keep the communication channels open

There’s nothing worse than being left in the dark when you’re in the middle of the house-buying process. So, don’t be afraid to talk to your solicitor or estate agent when you feel things aren’t moving quickly enough. However, as a Charles Cameron client the last thing you will be is ‘left in the dark’. Proactively caring for our clients through the whole process is a priority for us and we will be there for you every step of the way. Also remember, there’s no such thing as a stupid question – whatever’s bothering you, don’t be afraid to ask.
